Book Review - Salt to the Sea
Summary
Salt to the Sea is a heart-wrenching book about four young refugees seeking shelter during World War II. The four main characters all have their own secrets and own dark pasts that they share within the novel. The four young refugees have different backgrounds and different points of view on the war. The novel shows their hard journey throughout a forest and gives you an idea of how the refugees within World War II would feel. Near the end of the novel all characters aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a boat in which promises to give them safety and freedom. However, the promises that made had been broken and a Russian submarine bombs the ferry. Two of the four characters die and the other two live to see the future. In the end, they survive and live in the USA together.
Book Club
I was overjoyed to be a part of Bromley experience, as I thoroughly love reading. I was excited about the many books that we would have the opportunity to read, especially as they would be books not on the curriculum and that deal with challenging issues.
Salt to the Sea
I have not been disappointed; the first book that we read (Salt to the Sea) was incredibly interesting to read, as it evoked a range of emotions throughout. Whilst reading, there was a constant need to find out what happened to the characters and what might happen to them next – the tension throughout was captivating.
What I find the most fascinating about this book is the way that it is structured. The way the author switches between the different characters’ points of view for the same event or scene gives me a more detailed understanding of the characters’ thoughts and feelings.
I would highly recommend this novel because Salt to the Sea is a brilliant way of exposing people to the true, horrific dangers they may face and, at times, the compassionate side of human nature.
