European Day of Languages
This year marked the 14th anniversary of the European Day of Languages (EDL) celebrated at the Council of Europe and throughout its 47 member states.
Although traditionally it is celebrated on 26th of September every year, the students of HGABR went further this year by participating in a weeks’ worth of activities.
Staff joined in the promoting of this event and the importance of language learning by encouraging students into an array of activities, with the aim of fostering a lifelong love for language learning, in and out of school.
Day one sees HGABR adapt its lunch menu with a Spanish twist, while more students enjoyed some extracurricular baking, making their very own éclairs & tortillas – delicioso! (Spanish)
Day two and our visitors for the Academy’s Open Evening join in the activities by testing our Rosetta Stone software and conversing with some of our talented languages staff. Some left with a brightly coloured accessory in the form of an EDL bracelet while other contributed to our pin board of ‘Where are you from?’ – Bonjour et bienvenue (French)
Day three launches with taster sessions for our Year 10 students who chose to learn a new language for the day; from Greek, German, Italian and Russian - μάθηση, Lernen, apprendimento, обучение, Learning
Day four sees our Year 7 students receive their very own Passport to the European Union. This booklet specifically designed for students, contains basic information on the Member States of the European Union as well as descriptions of famous sites, monuments, people etc. In addition it has stickers with coins, flags and monuments providing an interactive element -According to Roman mythology who were the founders of Rome? Day five and our Year 9 Language Leaders Club looks further afield then the Academy as they make their applications to become student ambassadors for the MFL department - Ausgezeichnetes engagement (German)
As the week-long celebration ends, the students are left to consider how learning an additional language can help them later in life, whether as part of their career, or just for fun while traveling.
