Carnegie Shadow Awards
The pupils were broken up into six groups, with each group reading a different book nominated for the Carnegie Prize. The goal was to create a presentation to persuade the audience that their book had the best plot and characters, as well as best relating to this year’s theme: Amnesty International. Presentations would then be judged on their professionalism and persuasive argument. The students worked outstandingly in lessons during the term to produce an array of posters, collages, and digital presentations to support their book.
On June 20th, after starting early and braving the rain, the students had one hour to join the groups from other schools who had read their matching book to combine their work and ideas into a 10 minute presentation. Utilising their excellent teamwork and presentation skills the girls worked vigorously with the other students, who they were meeting for the first time, to produce presentations that represented the entire group’s ideas. The judges paid particular praise to the poster presentations used by our students.
In the end, our group of schools selected the same winners as the formal award ceremony. One by Sarah Crossman was selected as the winner of the CILIP Carnegie Medal and The Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley was selected as the winner of the Amnesty CILIP Honour.
Furthermore, four Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley students were part of the winning group with the best presentation and won prizes for their excellent efforts; Congratulations to Eden-Trinity Blackman, Abbey Brown, Samiyah Rahman, and Amarachi Uzokwe. The project was a great success and all of the girls were delighted to be a part of what is the most prestigious literature award for children. Roll on next year!
