Language Leaders
Three groups of Year 9 students delivered lessons to local primary school children. The event was attended by students from Harris Primary Crystal Palace and Alexandra Junior School. Our Year 9 students delivered lessons to the children about Christmas in France and Spain.
Year 9 students were selected via application at the start of the year to share their commitment and enthusiasm for languages. Since September they have learnt a variety of different approaches to teaching Modern Foreign Languages and been busy practising their teacher persona!
The girls have grown in confidence, both in their ability as teachers, and in their language. Miss. Willemen, a Year 9 French teacher commented:
‘I’ve noticed remarkable progress in their self-confidence and the ease with which they use the language.’
The lessons were engaging and the students certainly managed to pass on their enthusiasm to the younger children. They taught key Christmas vocabulary as well as leading a discussion on some cultural differences between Christmas in France, Spain and England.
Feedback from the primary schools was incredibly positive. Some of the comments were:
‘The event was really well organised and my pupils absolutely loved the whole experience; they were chatting in French the whole way back to school!’
‘The girls that led the sessions were confident, friendly and really encouraged all pupils. They are a true asset to your academy and I was thoroughly impressed by not only their knowledge but their maturity throughout the afternoon.’
The language leaders are soon to deliver their next lesson, where they will use short film as a resource to explore various language and aspects of French and Spanish culture. This is a continuation of our work with the British Film Institute and the Screening Languages project (www.screeninglanguages.org).
Congratulations and good luck to all the languages leaders in their upcoming sessions:
