Religious Education

We aim to enable pupils to understand and reflect upon the religious and spiritual beliefs, practices, insights and experiences that are expressed in humanity’s search for meaning in life.

We provide opportunities for pupils to explore and express their own responses and personal beliefs. We aim to ensure that HGABR students know about and understand a range of religions and world views, can express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews, and gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and world views.

Religious education promotes pupils’ understanding of the multicultural and multi faith society that we live in today by enabling them to explore issues of belief and issues between faiths. Having learned about different faiths and beliefs, pupils are then encouraged to understand how we can interact with each other and explore inter faith issues of contemporary society.

We seek to instil attitudes in our students which allow them to fully enter into the study of religion and to enhance their contribution to other aspects of school life. These skills include commitment, open-mindedness, respect, self-esteem, and appreciation and wonder.

Our RE syllabus, following closely the recommendations of the Bromley SACRE and in line with government recommendations, reflects ‘the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.’ While being non-denominational, we take full advantage of opportunities to study all six main world religions.
