Art & Design

Full Subject Title

 ART & DESIGN

Subject at Harris Academy Bromley:

The Art Department strives to offer students a well rounded Art education which both supports the acquisition of traditional skills such as drawing and painting as well as creative risk taking experimenting with processes such as: printing, sculpture, photography and even face-paint. From Year 7 and 8, students begin to learn about a range of artists and designers using research to inform analysis: learning to understand visual language, something which is increasingly important in a world dominated by images.

This practice is developed further into GCSE, as studying the work of other artists becomes part of the course criteria. GCSE students take part in gallery visits or masterclass workshops during years 10 and 11 to deepen their understanding of the professional art world.

At A Level students can study both Art and Design and Photography, practicing a range of processes from oil painting and mixed media to light painting and fast shutter splash photography. Students choose their own pathway and specialisms during these years developing their own practice.
