Tis the season for giving!

It has been an amazing term, which has seen many charitable activities take place at the academy, led by our students and Mr Derry.

This term we have hosted two coffee mornings with the proceeds going to the charities Macmillan and Shelter. Visitors from the local community and parents who joined us on an open morning, got to chat amongst themselves and with staff/students while digging into some scrummy cakes and biscuits, many of which were made by our very talented staff and students.

During this years banding test some of our Year 10 students hosted their own coffee morning as a fund raising event for their Camps International Peru trip in 2019. The Peru trip is a four week life-enhancing school expedition where students get to meet the locals, trek the Salkanatay Trail and help to build items such as green houses and school kitchens, in aid of boosting children's nutrition in the community of Kajilarakay.

HGABR continued its annual tradition of a collection for the local food bank in the build up to Christmas. We surpassed last year by collecting over 1700 items, which were dropped off to the Holy Trinity Church by our Y7s and Sixth Form. In addition to the food bank, this year the academy also collected for a clothing bank. Once again students and staff rallied around this cause and we managed to collect an amazing amout of items that were handed out by our Sixth Form students  (a special thanks goes out to some extremely charitable parents and people within our community who dropped off almost a third of the donations received).

The annual poppy collection had our Sixth Form students collecting donations during tutor time, to raise a couple of hundred pounds towards a great cause. A small section of the Year 7 choir formed part of the Remembrance Service on Sunday 12th November, at Beckenham War Memorial. Accompanied by a brass band, the choir sang ‘Oh God our help in Ages past’, ‘Jerusalem’ and the ‘National Anthem’ and were joined by members of the community including other schools, scout groups and local dignitaries. Zainab from 7G3 laid a poppy wreath with Ms Collett on behalf of the Academy, to commemorate those who have lost their lives in war.

We are looking forward to next term to explore further opportunities of giving back.
